As of October 23, the City of Weston's live park-status notice said one thing about the park at 2900 Bonaventure Boulevard: "Windmill Ranch is closed." The City's park listings had scheduled the construction closure to run through June 2026. The project page now gives "early Fall" as the expected completion. Fall is well underway, and no ribbon cutting is on the City's calendar.
Most of the money pays for a front door. Windmill Ranch has been a city park for years, but it never had an entrance of its own. The $5,779,219 project gives it one, plus a set of courts this side of Bonaventure has never had. Until the fences come down, every one of those courts already exists on Saddle Club Road.
A city park most people reached through a school
Windmill Ranch sits next to Everglades Elementary. Weston Together reported in August that many residents never knew the land was a city park. It had no parking of its own, and the only way in was across school property. The City's own project page puts it plainly: the park "is currently under-utilized by the public at large." The City says direct access from Bonaventure Boulevard and dedicated parking will "give this park greater exposure."
The new entrance is the core of the project. What sits behind it is a much bigger park than the old field-and-playground layout. According to Weston Together, the redesign, which was shaped with public input, includes:
- A multipurpose open play field that doubles as an event lawn
- An accessible playground under a shade canopy
- A sand court for beach volleyball and beach tennis
- A multicourt for basketball and pickleball
- A Bankshot family basketball area
- Exercise equipment and a shaded picnic area
- A walking path with a soft poured surface
- Landscaping, restrooms and parking off Bonaventure Boulevard
The City calls it its most dramatic before-and-after to date. For households near the Bonaventure end of town, it means pickleball and sand courts within reach without heading out to the larger parks.
How a June closure window became "early Fall"
The project has been underway for more than a year. Here is how the dates have moved, based on the City's own pages.
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| June 16, 2025 | City Commission agenda proposes awarding Bid No. 2025-01 to Burke Construction Group, Inc. of Doral |
| September 2, 2025 | Construction begins and the park closes |
| Through June 2026 | Closure window shown in the City's park listings |
| July 30, 2026 | City news post says completion is anticipated in early Fall |
| October 23, 2026 | City status notice: "Windmill Ranch is closed" |
The City project page reads "Anticipated completion is now early Fall," still lists the phase as "Construction in Progress," and gives no specific day. The quickest way to know when the gates open is the City's park and field closures page, where the Windmill Ranch notice is updated in real time.
Every court on the plan already exists on Saddle Club Road
Look at the new park's court list, then look at Weston Regional Park at 20200 Saddle Club Road. Regional Park already has eight pickleball courts, four sand volleyball courts and beach tennis, and it's open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Windmill Ranch's planned court space is far smaller: one sand court and one shared multicourt. That makes it a neighborhood convenience, not a replacement for the Regional Park courts.
| Planned at Windmill Ranch | Where it exists today |
|---|---|
| Sand court for beach volleyball and beach tennis | Weston Regional Park, four sand volleyball courts plus beach tennis; Eagle Point Park, 18691 North Lake Boulevard |
| Basketball and pickleball multicourt | Weston Regional Park, eight pickleball courts; Indian Trace Park, 17998 Saddle Club Road; Weston Racquet Club, 16451 Racquet Club Road, four pickleball courts |
| Leashed-dog access | City's Windmill Ranch listing allows dogs on a leash up to six feet; Regional Park does not allow dogs |
The dog rules in that table come from the City's Windmill Ranch Park listing and its Regional Park listing.
Under Weston's park rules, sand courts are first-come, first-served unless a league has them reserved, and play is capped at one hour when others are waiting. Pickleball runs on a rotation: players hold their place in line by putting a paddle in the paddle holder, and doubles is required when people are waiting. Weston Racquet Club works differently. The City says residents, non-residents and visitors can play there through memberships, hourly court rentals and programs.
Groups that want guaranteed court time can rent it. Under the City's rental fee schedule, effective October 1, 2026, private individuals pay $50 an hour for a basketball or sand court and $65 an hour for a set of four pickleball courts. Non-Weston sports alliance teams pay $85 and $100 for the same courts.
The dog row matters most for people who live near Windmill Ranch. Regional Park bans dogs, so the City's August "Paws in the Park" map is the quickest way to check which parks allow them before you leash up. The current Windmill Ranch listing still describes the old pre-redesign layout, so its dog policy could change once the new park opens.
The road to the new entrance is a project of its own
The new park will be entered from Bonaventure Boulevard, and that road has been under construction too. The City's milling and resurfacing project runs from Griffin Road to Indian Trace. A June notice planned nightly paving from June 7 through July 7, 2026. The project page later listed lane closures at Bonaventure and Royal Palm, and at the bridge near Griffin Road, from September 8 to 25. It now projects completion in October 2026, but the City has not announced the work is finished. Like the park, the road started on one timeline and moved to a later one. Both should wrap up around the same time.
Two weekends that fill the gap
The park isn't open yet, but early November is busy around the Bonaventure side of town and the Saddle Club Road parks.
- St. Bonaventure Family Festival, November 5 to 8. Just over the line in Davie at 1301 SW 136th Avenue. Hours are 5 to 10 p.m. on November 5, 5 to 11 p.m. on November 6, 2 to 11 p.m. on November 7, and 1 to 9 p.m. on November 8. The festival page lists free admission to the grounds, with tickets for rides, food, drinks and games.
- YMCA Veterans Day Salute, November 6. The 12th annual breakfast runs 8:30 to 11 a.m. at Bonaventure Town Center Club, 16690 Saddle Club Road. It's free for veterans, and the YMCA of South Florida page says registration is full.
- Kid-tacular Show Series, November 7. "Marci Poppins The Explorer" plays at 1:30 and 3 p.m. at the Weston Community Center, 20200 Saddle Club Road. Admission is free.
- Moonlight Movie in the Park, November 7. "Toy Story 5" screens 7:30 to 9:15 p.m. at the Regional Park Event Stage. It's free, and the City notes titles can change.
- Foreign Film, November 9. The City's series shows "Calle Malaga" from Spain at 4:45 and 7:30 p.m. at AMC Weston 8, 1338 SW 160th Avenue in Sunrise. Tickets are $10, subject to availability.
- WestonNights Outdoor Concert, November 14. FLAVOR plays 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Regional Park Event Stage. Admission is free, with food trucks on site.
Three of those six events take place at 20200 Saddle Club Road, the same address as the courts in the table above. That's where Weston's outdoor activity happens for now. When Windmill Ranch opens, the Bonaventure side gets its own field, event lawn and courts right off its main road, with parking that doesn't depend on the school.
A park that finally has its own entrance on Bonaventure Boulevard could change how buyers see the streets around it. If you're wondering how projects like this factor into your home's value, The Gobin Group can walk you through it with a home valuation built around your street.
